N2 - Summary. The Author deals with the significance and dimension of Gender Medicine. Gender Medicine does not mean attracting the attention of the scientific and clinical world to illnesses that more frequently affect men or women, or to illnesses linked to reproductive system or to females health. Gender Medicine means the knowledge of how diseases of all organs and body systems differ in men and women in terms of symptoms, diagnostic pathways, interpretation of test results, need and response to drug therapy as well as prevention. Examples of important differences in cardiology are reported. But the most important message of the Editorial is that the term “Gender Medicine” is not appropriated, it risks to mislead the real significance of this most important dimension of Medicine. The term “Gender Medicine” gives the idea of a separate or parallel branch of Medicine performed by special doctors. Thus Gender Medicine per se does not exist. Instead Medicine declined by gender should encompass all branches of Medicine. This is the reason why we need to speak about Gender-specific Medicine. Only a Gender-specific Medicine should exist because all specialties of Medicine should be taught and put into practice on the basis of gender differences. Therefore new programs of University education in medical schools should be started and all clinical guidelines should be revised.
