N2 - Summary. Physical exercise has been traditionally considered with an “androcentric” view, and most of our knowledge on training is derived from studies which mainly included male athletes. Nevertheless, several undeniable physical and physiological differences exist between women and men in terms of athletic performance, response and adaptations to physical exercise. The increasingly larger participation of women in a broad variety of sports – together with the growing awareness of the existence of significant sex-related differences in response to training – confirm the need to include sex as a biological variable to be considered for an optimal tailored exercise intervention.
