N2 - Summary. Male and female brains are similar, but not identical. The differences may be attributed to various genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Many studies reported sex/gender differences in perception and cognition. Molecular neuroimaging, based on PET and SPECT techniques with specific radiotracers, demonstrated gender and sex differences in normal aging and neurological conditions. In the current review we describe some emerging results on the sex and gender-specific brain molecular differences, both in normal and in pathological aging. The evidence is still limited due to methodological reasons and lack of systematic approaches; however, the related findings are promising and important also for future experimental and clinical studies.
